Have there ever been any Asterix books that were not done by Goscinny and Uderzo that were illegal?

yes, it exist a lot of  plagiaries in german and in dutch language. I'm not sure whether any of these were translated in english or whether there are english "works" as well. But I have seen a french plagiarism one time.

There are also some professional made "parody" albums which were forbidden (in Germany at least) because the courts of law said that the "parodies" are plagiarism in truth. First of all this are the "Isterix" and "Alcolix" comics. But I don't know whether they exist in english, too or whether they are illegal in Britain.

For an overview over the titles of the most known German Asterix plagiaries, look here:

in dutch there are e.g.

- Asterix en de kerncentrale
- Asterix de geilaard

translation:

- Asterix and the nuclear powerplant (a protest against nuclear power)
- Asterix the horny one? ( a porno parody )

I see those are on the list of German "parodies Erik gave a link to as well ...

Perhaps it's a good thing for Uderzo that Asterix never caught on in North America  :o  ... things like that are viewed/treated differently depending especially if it's parody, pastiche or porn - for the most part PARODY (making fun of the characters - like Abum 33 if Uderzo hadn't written it :P )  is considered "free speech" as long as it's not defamatory (which would mainly mean PORN) and changes the original names ...  pastiche on the other hand has been fought constantly by major companies for decades (mostly fanfic) and is technically illegal - but mostly ignored if not done publicly or for profit ...

This is a far more serious problem in the Tintin world, but these 'illegal' copies fall into 3 categories:
-Pirates . These are books by G and U, but that are published illegally, often if the original book is rather rare.

-Pastiches. These are done by fans and are designed to be very close to the style of G and U. Often the artwork is very good, and some can consider these to be real Asterix stories.

- Parodies. These are done to humiliate Asterix and are pretty discraceful. They are often used for pornographic or political purposes.

I've just seen the cover of one called 'Alcoholix'. It is at: http://makizart.free.fr/tintin_no/default.htm, but you have to scroll down a while to reach it. This also has many parodies of Tintin and Asterix on it.
